DAY 1 Arrival Inuvik, NWT, Canada – Ice Road
Meals: Cultural Dinner
Fly into Inuvik where your guide will greet you for an adventure down the iconic Aklavik Ice Road! During this journey you will have a local guide introduce you to Aklavik, the history of the Ice Road, and the people that call this area home! Enjoy many amazing photo opportunities along the frozen highway. Once in Aklavik, you will have a cultural tour with your local guide, and be able to meet and hear stories from a local elder at their craft store.
Leaving Aklavik you will travel back on the Ice road to our exclusive Aurora Igloo Village to enjoy a meal of traditional food and learn more about the Inuit traditions and practices around a fire and our Igloos and Tipis. The same night, you will be shown to your very own igloo where you will spend the night. Our guide will be available all night if you request a wake-up call to see the northern lights, or just simply experience an amazing spectacle the Arctic Winters have to offer.
DAY 2 Activities
Meals: Breakfast and packed lunch
Once you’re up in your igloo, join us in the main Tipi to enjoy breakfast and with the caffeine pick-me-up of your choice. After filling your bellies, there will be a range of activities and sights to see throughout the day. Start off with building an igloo, maybe snowshoe through our trails, and learn about and try some of the cultural Northern Games.
Participate in snowmobile training on the lake to get comfortable before your journey along a traditional trapline by snowmobile and enclosed side by side, weaving your way toward the new Mackenzie Valley Highway, where a vehicle will meet you to bring you to Tuktoyatuk and the coast of the Arctic Ocean. There, you will settle into your B&B to reminisce what you’ve experience during the first two days in the Arctic and eat a hearty meal, with the potential to view northern lights!
DAY 3 Reindeer Herding
Meals: Breakfast
Waking up on the shore of the Arctic Ocean, you will eat breakfast before going out by snowmobile and enclosed side by side to experience Parks Canada’s National Historic Site, the Pingo Canadian Landmark. (Pingos are landforms of permafrost filled hills that the Inuit used as landmarks in a relatively flat environment.) Head out onto the Arctic Ocean to experience its vastness and drill a hole in the ice for a chance to dip your toe in the Arctic Ocean.
After the pingo tour, your guides will load up to head back onto the Mackenzie Valley Highway towards Inuvik, where, just before reaching the tree-line, you will unload and head out by snowmobile and side by side to see the 2500+ reindeer herd. There you will have lunch in the company of grazing, and relaxing reindeer, then experience herding and interacting with the herd up close. Travel over the tundra back to the highway and finish the drive to Inuvik to spend a leisure night at the Mackenzie Hotel in Inuvik.
DAY 4 Cultural Tour
Meals: N/A
This is your day to experience Inuvik through our community cultural tour, see the Igloo Church, buy souvenirs from local craft shops and interact with the locals. At lunch, you will be shuttled back to the airport to catch your flight home.
As you leave this remote Arctic region, you will be filled with positive memories and be forever changed by your experiences in this remote region of the world. You may be leaving the Arctic, but these Arctic experiences will always be with you influencing awe-inspiring stories for family and friends for years to come.
