Laura Harris Painting Retreat South Africa WineLands

Small-Group Tour

Join the wonderfully talented artist, Laura Harris, for a heavenly week of creative, cultural, and epicurean experiences in Winelands of South Africa.

Our home for 7 nights will be at Brookdale Estate located in the Western Cape, it’s a world-class manor set beneath an endless sky and against the dramatic backdrop of the Klein Drakenstein mountains.

Here, the warm African sunshine dances through the swaying vines, and a pastoral sense of serenity washes over you.”  ~ Brookdale Estate

With 67 hectares of vineyards, brooks, and gardens to explore, we’ll observe the quiet pace of nature that surrounds us every day and use it to inspire and direct us in our art and creativity. We’ll gather most mornings to paint and draw together using paper, watercolours, and ink – a more gentle approach than Laura’s previous workshops, this process will allow us to move more freely with a lighter footprint.

To fuel our creativity for our painting sessions, we’ll be pampered by the staff and renowned chef Gary Coetzee. We’ll sip estate wine, laze and laugh by the pool, hike the trails, enjoy luxurious spa services, and explore the surrounding area of picturesque Paarl. It’s going to feel like heaven on earth.
Inspired, connected, generous and intuitive, Laura Harris has motivated countless people to rewrite their stories and honour their creative calling. Offered to beginners and non-beginners alike, Laura will share her unique approach to painting, with a focus on local inspiration and personal expression.

**Afterward, you have the option of joining us on a 3-night safari in the Eastern Cape. Kariega Game Reserve is a family-owned and operated Big 5 private safari reserve located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The reserve is situated along the Garden Route, making it the perfect South African safari destination to complement a Cape Town visit and a trip along the country’s beautiful coast.

Brookdale Estates - Laura Harris Painting Retreat

Day 1 – Arrival in Cape Town, South Africa and Transfer to Brookdale Estate

Welcome to South Africa! Arrive in the fabulous Mother City – Cape Town, and make your own way to Brookdale Manor House. We recommend grabbing an Uber from the airport – they’re cheap and reliable! Then one of the best ways to truly know that you are in Africa is our iconic sunsets, so let’s sit overlooking the vineyard, grab a glass of wine and say cheers to your great trip ahead!

We would STRONGLY recommend arriving to Cape Town a few days early in order to explore this fabulous city and recover from the long journey. Both Keri & Nicola have been to Cape Town several times and are more than happy to help you with hotels and activities.

Resting at the confluence of the Indian and Atlantic Ocean, sandwiched between the slopes of the iconic Table Mountain and the glistening sapphire waters of Table Bay, the exceptionally scenic city of Cape Town is in a class of its own. Some cities boast rich culture, vibrant nightlife, a cosmopolitan atmosphere, and extraordinary architecture, while others boast breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary natural wonders. Cape Town is lucky enough to be blessed with all these attractions and so much more. With its bustling harbour, world-class beaches, top-notch vineyards, and mountainous surroundings brimming with diverse flora and fauna, Cape Town consistently captivates the hearts of all who visit.

We will spend 7 nights at the magnificent Brookdale Manor House at the Brookdale Estate. Paint and inspired by the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds you, be pampered by the staff and chef Gary at Brookdale Estate, and explore the surrounding area of the Cape Winelands. Each stay is a unique blend of people, experiences, and places … a beautiful mosaic of moments.

Painting with Laura Harris: With 67 hectares of vineyards, brooks, and gardens to explore, we’ll observe the quiet pace of nature that surrounds us every day and use it to inspire and direct us in our art and creativity. We’ll gather most mornings to paint and draw together using paper, watercolours and ink – a more gentle approach than Laura’s previous workshops, this process will allow us to move more freely with a lighter footprint. Laura will spend time working with everyone and helping you tap into your creativity. Most mornings we’ll spend time dedicated to the creative process. Create. Paint. Laugh. Be Inspired.

Excursions: During several of the afternoons, we’ll include excursions around the Western Cape to gain a better understanding of this beautiful country, its stunning landscapes, cuisine, and its friendly people.  With luck, we might encounter some wildlife as we explore the region.
No visit to this region would be complete without sampling delicious wines, from the old and the new world. Travel to little towns and marvel at the ability of winemakers to become magicians with the terroir. Smell and taste our way through the vineyards.

South Africa Wildlife Safari

Day 8 – Departure OR Continue to Settlers Drift Luxury Tented Camp in the Kariega Game Reserve

Should you choose to add the safari portion of this trip (additional cost), on May 18th, we’ll take to the air, flying from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, onwards to the Kariega Game Reserve, located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Located in a remote and untouched part of the Kariega wilderness, Settlers Drift offers a unique tented safari combined with 5-star luxury. The lodge consists of 9 spacious tented suites, each with stunning views and secluded viewing decks. Gazing down from the decks overlooking the Bushman’s River, it feels as if time has stood still since the last feet to have touched this remote valley were those of the 1820 Settlers as they guided their wagons across the river. The luxuriously appointed and perfectly positioned tented lodge delivers the ultimate guest experience.

The Eastern Cape is the second largest of South Africa’s nine provinces and incorporates five ecological zones – ranging from lush evergreen forest to rugged mountain and dry savannah. On the southeast border, the beautiful Sunshine Coast offers miles of pristine beaches and a warm sparkling ocean dotted with rivers, lagoons, and coastal villages. The Eastern Cape is also the fastest-growing nature and conservation area in South Africa and offers the best in malaria-free, Big 5 wildlife safaris.

Kariega Game Reserve is situated in Frontier Country, the historical heartland of the Eastern Cape. This inland area embodies the spirit of many cultures which currently form part of South Africa’s Rainbow Nation, including the British 1820 Settlers, the Khoi, the Xhosa, and the Boers. The Eastern Cape province is also the birthplace of many prominent South Africans including Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.

At Kariega, everything revolves around our twice-daily safari drives – the close-up encounters with African wildlife are the centre of guests’ unforgettable safari holidays. Our experienced game rangers will drive you out on safari every morning and afternoon/evening in open game-drive vehicles, traversing the valleys, grassy plains, and African bushveld to bring you close to the Big 5 and other game roaming freely in their natural habitat. If you are fortunate, you may witness the lion hunting or feeding, or even the heartwarming social interactions of an elephant herd.

Meals: All Meals Included

**Should you not choose to extend your stay, then you will make your own way back to the Cape Town Airport, or contact us to extend your stay elsewhere. We are happy to help plan your extension in South Africa.

Inspired, connected, generous and intuitive, Laura Harris exemplifies and champions the crafting of a creative life.

With a long list of successful exhibits that span 20 years and collectors worldwide, Laura’s paintings are described as beautifully imperfect. Often large in scale with strikingly bold colours and texture, each piece offers discovery. Her process is rooted in memory and imagination, and her emotions are palpable. When she’s at work, Harris becomes utterly engrossed in her practice. It’s a fully physical task with music turned up loud and paint flying. Laura applies the same love and abandon to all other areas of her life.

Harris’ is a positive oeuvre, but there are contrasts in texture and hue that suggest the opposition of forces. Exuberant, sensual, and often surprising, Laura’s images are known and prized for their irresistible energy. Her relationship with light has been compared to that of Turner.

“Recognizing and honouring your own creative spark will lead you… it will open you, lift you, free you, and most importantly connect you… to yourself, to your purpose, to the highest love, and to all those who champion you. It will bring you home to your very core.” – Laura Harris
