Ancient Greek ruins rise out of lush citrus orchards, cafe tables spill onto dazzling baroque piazzas, and medieval lanes lead down to the sparkling blue sea. But as handsome as it is, the city is no museum piece − life goes on here much as it has for 3000 years.

It was founded in the 4th century BC, it enjoyed great prosperity under the Greek ruler Gelon II and later under the Romans, but fell into quiet obscurity after being conquered by the Normans in 1087. Spectacularly perched on the side of a mountain, Taormina is now Sicily’s most popular summer destination.
